COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY (CIT)
WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING AND WHO IS IT FOR?
Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses a handheld device containing very fine needles that inflict micro-punctures to the skin. These controlled injuries trigger the skin’s natural wound healing and repair processes, resulting in cell turover and the stimulation of new collagen and elastin production. Microneedling is a relatively simple and fast method for those looking to treat acne scarring, pitted scars, hyper pigmentation, sun damage, lines and wrinkles and stretch marks.
HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING WORK?
Microneedling is a method of triggering the repair response of skin. The needles on a microneedling device puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture of the needle creates a microscopic channel, or empty space. The skin recognizes this channel as tissue loss and begins to produce collagen and elastin to “fill” the channel. Collagen, is the main structural protein in skin responsible for sustaining skin integrity, firmness, and elasticity. The result is an improvement in skin texture, tone, firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?
A microneedling treatments can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending upon the area being treated. The length and depth of the needle will affect whether there will be any bleeding. Topical numbing cream is applied to the skin prior in order to avoid discomfort.
A hydrating hyaluronic acid serum is then applied to the skin as glide while the device rolls over your skin. The sensation is often described as feeling “prickly” and painless. Immediately after treatment, your skin will experience temporary redness and minor swelling. These effects generally subside within 12-24 hours depending on your skin's healing ability.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?
Immediately after treatment, your skin may experience redness, minor swelling, itching and discomfort. These effects generally subside within 12-14 hours. Expect your skin to peel and flake 3-5 days and experience dryness after, as this is an important part of the healing process. Microneedling benefits are an improvement in skin texture, firmness and tone, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size and stretch marks. Avoid touching the skin, and always keep skin moisturized to aid the healing process.
POST CARE INSTRUCTIONS
As the skin will be more sensitive following a microneedling facial, it is highly recommended to avoid sun exposure and avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours following the treatment. It is vital to protect skin with a mineral sunscreen SPF 30 minimum. 4 hours after the treatment, gently cleanse the face with a gentle cleanser( fragrance/perfume-free), paired with an antioxidant serum and a repairing moisturizer. 24 hours post-treatment, you may apply makeup, while continuously using skincare for sensitive skin.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET MICRONEEDLING?
It is important to remember that while you may see results after one session, it is generally recommended that microneedling be completed in a series of 3-6 treatments every 4-6 weeks, followed by a homeware routine. The frequency of treatments depends upon the skin condition being treated, this will be assessed by the skin specialist.
